Next-Gen AI for Climate Action!
By S R Ranjan: Can the next-generation Artificial Intelligence (AI) generate nature-based solutions (NbS) for climate actions and join the humans, still in the denial-mode, in the race that we can win — Climate Change. Advancement of technology has a vital role in the betterment of sectors like health and education; it time when ‘climate emergency’ is declared technology like AI should be incorporated in the climate technology to a fundamental role in galvanizing climate action. There’s no time to spare, we have to Act Now and put AI into climate action.
Put to test, AI could probably study global climate change scenario better and faster based on data, track or analyse changing climatic condition and weather patterns across the longitudes and latitudes, calculate the past and present conditions and data to predict with more accuracy the future status and precise climate actions. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has marked a step-change for work on climate technology. Its technology mechanism launched an initiative on AI for Climate Action (#AI4ClimateAction) which is now gathering growing awareness, importance and engagement.
Now, with growing implications of AI in various other sectors, more and more stakeholders are interested in exploring the role of AI and implicating it as a powerful tool for a move forward to scale up transformative climate action. According to the UNFCCC, the main focus of the initiative is on developing countries, notably on least developed countries and small island developing states because of the more vulnerable regions and communities.
Financing for climate technology is critical. At the UN Climate Change Conference COP28, a key component of the 'UAE consensus’ called on Parties to take actions towards achieving a tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030. As part of the decision, Parties established a technology implementation programme to strengthen support for the implementation of technology priorities identified by developing countries.
At COP28, a high-level event was held under the #AI4ClimateAction initiative to discuss the application of AI for climate action to help accelerate the implementation of the Paris Agreement. “For example, AI-powered models can provide early warning systems to alert communities about impending disasters. And the efficiency and reliability of renewable energy systems can be improved by AI algorithms that predict energy demand and optimize grid operations,” states UNFCCC. “Only by working together, harnessing technology and making bold strides towards a new, better and more sustainable world, will we succeed in taming climate change,” said UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell at COP28.
